What is a mole?

A nevus, more commonly known as a mole, is a skin growth that is typically brown or black. Moles can occur on any part of the body.

Why have a mole removed?

The removal of a mole can be for cosmetic reasons, if it is irritated or painful, or for medical reasons if a skin cancer is suspected. A mole should be removed if it cancerous or irregular enough to be concerning that the mole will become a skin cancer. 

How is a mole removed at Orchard Park Aesthetics?

Dr. Davison will evaluate the mole to determine whether it should be biopsied due to cancer risk. He may then remove the mole by punch biopsy or by excision (cutting it out.) If the mole is cut out, the skin is then closed using stitches to minimize scarring. At Orchard Park Aesthetics, we make every effort to make the treatment as painless as possible. Appointments usually take 30 minutes to an hour for the removal procedure.

Should my mole be biopsied?

If you have developed a mole that has changed in color or size, Dr. Davison will check your mole to determine if there is any potential risk of skin cancer. A mole biopsy will be performed to help diagnose cellular changes in the skin that may develop into skin cancer. Dr. Davison performs punch biopsies, incisional biopsies, and excisional biopsies in order to retrieve specimens for pathologic examination under the microscope. All moles are sent to a dermatopathologist to insure the mole is entirely benign and removed.
